In Christ Alone

In 2001 Stuart Townend from England and Keith Getty from Northern Ireland composed the hymn “In Christ Alone”.  Townend wrote the words and Getty the music.  The song is very powerful- powerful words joined with a powerful tune.  The power of the words is that they are so richly Scripture-based.  The depth of this song cannot be appreciated by just merely reading it or singing it.

Below I have attached appropriate Scriptures with the words of the song.  I would suggest that you use this song as a daily meditation this week.  Take a verse per day and meditate on the words as you look up the passages and read them.  You will come to understand and appreciate more deeply how it is that we are where we are spiritually, “in Christ alone”.

In Christ Alone

“In Christ alone my hope is found (Acts 4:12; 1 Tim 1:1); He is my light (Jn 1:9), my strength (Phil 4:13), my song (Rev 5:12).  This cornerstone (Eph 2:20), this solid ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm (Mt 7:24-25).  What heights of love (Eph 3:18-19), what depths of peace (Phil 4:7), when fears are stilled (1 Pet 3:14-15), when strivings cease (2 Cor 10:5), my comforter (2 Cor 1:5), my all in all (Phil 3:7-8) - here in the love of Christ I stand (2 Cor 5:14-15).

In Christ alone, who took on flesh (Jn 1:14), fullness of God in helpless babe (Col 2:9).  This gift of love (Jn 3:16) and righteousness (Rom 5:17), scorned by the ones He came to save (Mt 27:39-44).  ‘Til on that cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied (Rom 5:9); for every sin on Him was laid (Isa 53:4-6)- here in the death of Christ I live (Jn 6:53-58).

There in the ground His body lay (Mt 27:57-60), light of the world by darkness slain (Lk 22:53).  Then bursting forth in glorious day, up from the grave He rose again (Mt 28:1-7).  And as He stands in victory (Col 2:15), sin’s curse has lost its grip on me (Gal 3:10-14); for I am His and He is mine- bought with the precious blood of Christ (1 Pet 1:18-19).

No guilt in life (Heb 9:14), no fear in death (Heb 2:14-15) - this is the power of Christ in me.  From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny (1 Thess 5:9).  No power of hell, no scheme of man, can ever pluck me from His hand (Rom 8:35-39; Jn 10:27-28); ‘til He returns or calls me home- here in the power of Christ I’ll stand (1 Thess 5:9-10; Col 1:29).”
